COL McCormick's Biography - MOVES Institute
COL Heath McCormick has served as the Military Director of the Army Modeling and Simulation Office (AMSO) since July of 2023. Prior to arriving at AMSO, he served as the Director of the Joint Multinational Simulation Center in Grafenwoehr, Germany.
Colonel McCormick was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry through the ROTC program at Edinboro University in 1997. He began his service as a platoon leader in C Co, 2- 502nd Infantry, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He then served as a platoon leader and company executive officer in B Co and HHC, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. Following completion of the Infantry Captain’s Career Course, Colonel McCormick served as a staff officer, and later Ranger Instructor, in the 6th Ranger Training Battalion, Camp James E. Rudder, FL.
Colonel McCormick then served as a battalion assistant operations officer in the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry (3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team) of the 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, WA. He deployed to Iraq from 2003-2004 and upon return took command of B Co, 2-3 Infantry. After command, Colonel McCormick served as an Assistant Professor of Military Science at the University of Oregon and later as the brigade operations officer for the 13th ROTC Brigade.
In 2007 he was selected to serve as a Simulation Operations Officer (Functional Area 57). Following successful completion of the Simulation Operations Officer Basic Course and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, he returned to the 75th Ranger Regiment where he served as the Deputy Regimental S-8 and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Following completion of Advanced Civil Schooling, Colonel McCormick served as the Deputy Director of the Fort Bragg Mission Training Complex at Fort Bragg, NC. Upon graduation from the U.S. Naval War College, Colonel McCormick served a tour in Europe, first as the G-37, Director of Training and Exercises, for U.S. Army Europe (USAREUR) and subsequently as the Director of the Joint Multinational Simulation Center, under the 7th Army Training Command.
Colonel McCormick holds an undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Edinboro University, a Master’s of Arts in Business and Organizational Security Management from Webster University, a Master’s of Science in Computer Science (Modeling & Simulations) from Columbus State University, and a Master’s of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College. His awards and decorations include the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge, and Ranger Tab. He has also earned Brazilian Parachutist Wings and the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge (Gold).
Colonel McCormick is married to the former Julia Smith of Camp Zama, Japan. They have two sons and a daughter.
